tales from the front

Some things from my actual real life:

1. Ran into a girl/woman at 18th getting off the bus, and realized she had a horribly burned face. Her entire face. Since I was not expecting to run into someone with a horribly burned face, I'm sure I flinched.

Then I was like, "... Great. Because I bet she doesn't get enough of that in her day to day life. If this were a YA novel, I would not be the kid who befriends the main character. Also I just flinched at a woman I don't even know."

2. Caved and bought Ceremonials, after holding out for ... possibly 48 hours. I was skeptical about some, not all, of the earlier tracks, but further listening is revealing this to be not only the greatest purchase I've made since yesterday when I bought a real '50s dress, but eerily appropriate soundtrack listening for tantric_slacker.

3. First day of new job tomorrow. I submitted my first piece for them and have lived in 24 hours of ominous radio silence.

4. In Occupy news, this picture from my FB newsfeed is not only worth a thousand words, but is itself made of words:

Additionally, Facebook rumor has it that the UCB chancellor said some very ugly things about how sad it was that Berkeley protesters had to make the police hit them via the violent act of standing in a barricading line.

Jesus Christ NorCal, it's like I don't even know you.

Is 2 plus 2 5 yet?

Oh, yes, he did. And they did. And then Chancellor Birgeneau backtracked and sent a new letter -- just today -- about how he was actually in Japan and Korea doing unspecified things for the university system, and he didn't see the videos of police violence and he's APPALLED, I tell you. So apparently either he didn't write the first letter, but signed his name to it anyway, or ... I don't even know, but my respect for him has not increased this week, let me tell you. :/

THANK YOU for weighing in.

I saw that new letter this afternoon, and someone just posted it to my FB status. Frankly I am like "... I'll believe that amnesty when I see it, buddy." I see a real pattern now of administrators and authority figures paying lip service to peace and nonviolence, while MYSTERIOUSLY police show up and start smacking people around.

I will also say that apprehension around cattle prods and tear gas IS A HIGHLY REASONABLE RESPONSE. Less reasonable: their presence at all.

I... okay, I don't think I can say anything more complete than my colleague Lili has said here. But insert rage.

Ahahaha, um. So I have had Ceremonials on repeat since last night, and? For serious, one of my first coherent thoughts was, "I wonder if Merc has been mainlining this while she writes Matt's demontastic plot?"

Ceremonials gets more mind-blowing with each listen. I've gone from "Hey, this is pretty good" to "omgomgomg *flail*" over the last week or two. Which is pretty much how I reacted to Lungs, too.

Re: 1, poor woman, I hate it when I inadvertently do that with people who look odd or disconcerting. It's totally natural, but it's also not fun for them. :(
